Type of production:
For this scenario based assignment, we have been asked to create a single-camera drama based production for BBC 3. This production must be suitable for people between the ages of sixteen and twenty-four, as it will be shown before the 9pm watershed, because of this it must comply with the BBC's guidelines on the watershed. |
Finance:
Any type of production within media requires a certain amount of financial input, whether it be a small amount of money, or a large amount. Finance is used to cover many expenses which, to name a few, include things such as:
As we will be filming this production and ourselves/people we know will be participating in the acting element of the production, we won't have to use any finances for actors. For the hire of the equipment, we will have to put a deposit down on the equipment we want to borrow, however the deposit is returned when the equipment is given back.
Here is a breakdown of some of the costs we may need to consider:
For this particular production the BBC would class it as a low cost drama and would provide funding between £375k-£500k per hour, as it is a one off, short drama for BBC 3.
- Crew - Camera crew, director, co-director, sound crew etc. All of the crew would need part of the finance to cover their wages, and if your chosen director is relatively famous, they would expect to be paid more than a newer director to production or someone that isn't as well known.
- Cast - The people that play the parts in a large part, or even a small part in productions has to be paid a wage, so some of your finance would have to go towards this.
- Equipment - Hiring equipment to film a production is generally a lot cheaper than buying your own. Equipment which you would need would include: camera, microphones, tripods, lights etc.

Time:
When making any type of production, the amount of time available has to be considered. The availability of the equipment we need to film/edit the final production and cast/crew also has to be considered, without these things the filming/editing of the production will not be a success.
Deadlines of when the production has to be completed by also have to be thought about, and in this case the deadline for this project is the February 24th 2016.
Most of the filming will be able to be done during our single-camera techniques lesson on a Wednesday, providing everyone involved in the production, crew and cast, is present during those lessons, as during these lessons the cameras and necessary equipment we will need to make our production becomes accessible to us.
Something we will need to consider when thinking about borrowing equipment outside of timetabled sessions will be whether other people within college will be using the equipment at the time when we may want to borrow it, meaning that the equipment we need to use wont be available to us.
If outside of classes we need to consider filming in our spare time, all of the personnel involved in the making and editing of the drama will need to be available for it to be successful. If you don't have the same people involved in the production each time you are filming and editing, then he production could go wrong and we may not meet our deadline.

Personnel:
For the making of our short drama I am working in a pair with Sophie. The two of us in the pair are doing the creative media production course, meaning that each of us has our own level of experience in making and editing videos to create a final short drama. For the making of the drama we may need other individuals which would be willing to act, this could consist of friends/family of someone in the group.
As there is only two of us, it will mean we will have to work harder to complete the final thing. There will be three jobs, meaning that one of us will either have to take up two of the jobs and the other one of us will have one job, or we will have to share a job. The jobs include: director, assistant director/producer and the camera operator. Sophie is taking the role of the assistant director/producer and I will be taking the role of the director. We will both be sharing the role of camera operator.
As well as me and Sophie in the group, we have asked friends to be in the short drama.
These include:
Sophie - Actress (Rhiannon)
Nicole - Actress (Grace)
Duncan - Actor (Noah)
Cody - Mugger (Joel)

Facilities:
To make this short drama a success there are several facilities we will need to consider. These things include the availability of the recording and sound equipment we will be using, the editing suites for when we have our footage and have to begin editing the drama all together. Most of the editing will be able to be completed within our timetabled sessions on a Wednesday morning.
Materials:
For the short drama to work, there is a small list of things we will need...these include, a bag for the actress playing Grace who is going to get mugged, Cody who is playing the mugger (Joel) will need a grey hoodie and Duncan who is playing Noah will need a hoodie as well.
Me and Duncan will be bringing their own hoodie and Nicole will be bringing a bag for her to use during the filming.
As well as this me and Sophie will be making things such as the treatment, the script and the storyboards which will be needed when we are on location filming.

Contributors:
People contributing to this short drama is mainly me and Sophie as we have produced most of the paperwork such as the treatment, the script, the storyboard and all the rest of the necessary forms.
I have produced the script, the treatment and the forms such as the risk assessment and doing the reccee of the location we will be filming at.
Sophie has produced the storyboard, editing and helping with the filming as well as being in the single drama playing the part of Tracey, which is the mugger.
Nicole will be an actress playing the part of the main character called Grace.
Sophie will also be an actress playing the part of the main characters friend called Rihannon.
Duncan will be an actor playing the part of the Noah aka the 'stalker'.
The editing will be done by me and Sophie within our timetabled sessions of single-camera techniques.

Locations:
For this short drama we will be filming in two locations, one is the area near to the subway in Leicester (shown by the photo on the right) and the other location will be throughout the actual subways for part of the drama. There will be several risks involved in the making of this drama which will be assessed before we go out and film by a risk assessment. | Risk assessment form for filming on location. |
Codes of practice and regulation:
To complete the production of the short drama safely we will need to complete risk assessments on both of the locations where we will be filming. As well as this, for the actors to be a part of our short drama they will need to fill in an actor release form. The form must be signed by them and their parent/guardian if they are under 18, this is proof that they have agreed to be filmed and any risks that are possible have been explained to them.
Ofcom is the communications regulator in the UK, they regulate the TV and radio services within the U.K. If somebody wishes to make a complaint about something that has been aired on either the radio or on the TV they would contact Ofcom to resolve the issue. As well as this, if a TV program breaks any guidelines on such things as the watershed then Ofcom would sort the issue out and take necessary action.
Permissions to shoot in certain locations are sometimes needed, however as we will be using a public park and Sophie's bedroom to film in, then filming shouldn't be an issue. As we will be filming in a public park where there will be other members of the community we will need to take their privacy into consideration and filming when there is a lot of people walking around the park wouldn't be suitable as if we don't have their permission to film them, it could cause minor problems. To avoid this, we will be using a quiet location within a park and we will try and stay away from areas that are often popular or busy.

Evaluation of pre-production:
During the production and pre-production of the short drama I worked alongside Sophie, our biggest problem we faced throughout the production was our time-management this was due to personal reasons beyond our control. For this assignment we managed to hand the video file in on time, however I didn't manage to hand the folder in on the deadline.
To avoid the same problem in future assignments I must remember to carefully plan out what parts of the assignment I will be doing at what stage and creating a checklist to manage which parts of the assignments I have completed so I don't have to keep going back through my folder and seeing what I have completed and what I haven't.
For the post-production and the creative processes of the overall video, we worked together to edit the video using Final Cut Pro, the finished video had to be between 3-4 minutes long, after editing ours was just over 3 minutes, meaning that we edited 1 and a half minutes each. To edit the video I worked in the editing suite on the Mac, Final Cut Pro enables you to trim clips that you have imported from your tape, add effects such as cross fade etc. easily so you get an overall video that flows smoothly. In Final Cut Pro you can also add credits and titles so the audience knows what your production is called and who was involved in the making and filming of the short drama. Overall I think this part of the assignment was very successful as for the video we managed to meet the deadline and got all of the editing and filming done in plenty of time.
For the resource management of the production and post-production we handled it very well. All of our filming we managed to get done during our timetabled Wednesday morning sessions between 9-11, this allowed us to have access to the camera and sound equipment that was necessary for us to use. As well as the filming part of the short drama being done within timetabled sessions we managed to get all of the editing of the video done within the Wednesday morning sessions as well, this meant that we had access to the Mac suite when we needed it. The most difficult thing I found for the resource element of the production was the folder and the paperwork that needed to be included within the folder such as: the treatment, the script, shot lists etc. To avoid this problem within the future I must make sure I refer back to the brief and make sure what I am doing and manage my time better so I don’t end up missing parts of the paperwork for the short drama out.
Personal management was a hard part of the assignment as I had to take time off over the course of the assignment being set and the deadline day, meaning that I was behind when it came to the deadline day which is why I didn’t manage to hand the folder in on time. To avoid the same problem in the future I would need to either catch up on the work in my own time so I can make sure that I don’t become too far behind, or make sure to spend time within the sessions without distractions so I can get on with the work and not be distracted, meaning that I would have time to catch up.
